Hispanic Heritage Month September 17, 2026 National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized from September 15 – October 15. Each year, the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers leads the process to select the annual Hispanic Heritage Month theme. This year’s theme, “Unidos, somos mas / Together, We are More” is an invitation to celebrate “family, resilience, creativity, faith, and service in honor of the diverse stories that strengthen our nation.” 1 We welcome the richness our Latine 2 community has brought to Boulder and will unwaveringly remain a welcoming city for all Latine community members, who have contributed to the city’s vibrancy, diversity, and history in ways both essential and immeasurable. The Hispanic Heritage observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson recognizing that five Central American countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua – celebrate their respective Independence Days on September 15, while Mexico celebrates it on September 16. In 1988, the week was expanded by President Ronald Reagan to cover a 30-day period to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latine people to the United States and those American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and who have long lived in Puerto Rico, the Gulf Coast, and the southwest of the United States. We encourage all community members to acknowledge and celebrate the many contributions of Hispanic and Latine people in enhancing and influencing our city’s character. Their talents, values, ideas, labor and new and old traditions reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their communities, while adding their own distinct perspectives to the story of Boulder. We, the City Council of the City of Boulder, Colorado declare September 15 through October 15, 2026, as Hispanic Heritage Month and invite the community to share and participate in this important and joyous celebration.
