National Gun Violence Awareness Day June 6, 2026 Every day, nearly 130 people in the United States are killed by gun violence. Based on the most recent Colorado Office of Gun Violence Prevention report, in 2024, 958 Colorado residents died due to a firearm-related injury. According to Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Colorado had the 21st highest gun death rate among the states in 2024. Protecting public safety in our community is the highest responsibility of city leaders. Cities across the nation, including Boulder, are working to end gun violence with evidence-based solutions. Support for the Second Amendment rights of responsible community members goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from people with dangerous and violent histories. Local leaders and law enforcement officers are the most familiar with local criminal activity and how to address it and are well positioned to understand how to keep their community members safe. Following the fifth anniversary of the King Soopers-Table Mesa mass shooting on March 22nd, 2021, we renew our commitment to reduce gun violence now more than ever. We pledge to do all we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and encourage responsible gun ownership to help keep our community safe. We, the City Council of the City of Boulder, Colorado declare June 6th, 2026, as
National Gun Violence Awareness Day And encourage all community members to support efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence.
