Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 19, 2026 The King Holiday and Service Act of 1994 designated the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. devoted his life to advancing equality, justice, and opportunity for all, and he challenged all people to participate in the never-ending work of building a more perfect union. Dr. King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957, he became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). While serving as president of the SCLC, he helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama and the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. On October 14, 1964, Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. Dr. King helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Moreover, in 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and in 1966, he and the SCLC protested segregated housing in Chicago. Dr. King also pressed world leaders to work together to address economic inequality, poverty, and the suffering caused by the Vietnam War. Dr. King’s hallmark approach to activism was to promote peace and nonviolence; he chose and encouraged empathy and diplomacy in pursuit of societal change. The legacy of his work continues to inspire us to address present-day inequities and injustices in our communities. We, the City Council of the City of Boulder, Colorado declare January 19, 2026, as
Martin Luther King Jr. Day And urge our fellow community members to help celebrate the spirit of this day by seeking out opportunities for service in our community.
