Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month May 2026 Historic preservation and archeology preserves intangible cultural heritage such as traditions, practices, knowledge, and living relationships to place; elevates diverse stories that foster a shared sense of belonging; shapes how places change over time; and honors the full diversity of Boulder to help the community understand where it has been, where it is now, and where it is going. Historic places in the Boulder area are tangible reflections of the lives, culture, memory, and craftsmanship of people who have lived in and stewarded this region over time. The City of Boulder established a historic preservation program in 1974 and over the last five decades, has designated 10 historic districts and 222 individual landmarks. 2026 marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, 150 years as a state, and 60 years of the National Historic Preservation Act. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has themed Archeology and Historic Preservation Month 2026 as “All People Are Created Equal.” Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month is an opportunity to celebrate our community’s historic places, and the community members doing the great work of saving places—in ways big and small. It is an opportunity to inspire others to do the same. We, the City Council of the City of Boulder, Colorado, declare May 2026 as
Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month and call upon the people of the City of Boulder to join their fellow community members across Colorado in recognizing and participating in this special observance.
