Lung Cancer Awareness Month November 2025 Lung cancer is the third most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. According to the National Cancer Institute and the CDC, the incidence rate of lung cancer in Boulder County from 2017-2021 was 31.5 cases per 100,000 people. Anyone can develop lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, as many as 20% of people in the U.S. who die from lung cancer have never smoked. Other causes include exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, asbestos, radiation, air pollution, and more. According to the American Lung Association 2025 “State of Lung Cancer” report, Colorado maintains above average rankings for lung cancer treatment and survival rate, but the risk of developing the disease remains strong due to a low national ranking for potentially life-saving disease screenings for high-risk individuals and a high prevalence of radon. Lung cancer research is leading to breakthroughs in the development of treatments. Nonetheless, funding for lung cancer research trails far behind funding for research of many other cancers, and additional research is needed in early diagnosis, screening, and treatment for lung cancer. We, the City Council of the City of Boulder, Colorado, declare November 2025 as

Lung Cancer Awareness Month And encourage community members to raise awareness of the need for continued research to find new and improved treatments.
