Guiding Principles The following guiding principles were developed collaboratively in the early 2010s by a stakeholder group that included parents, teachers, building and Ed Center leaders and classified staff. ●

Provide a calendar that is the same for all schools – elementary, middle, K-8 and high school.

●

Limit the number of partial school weeks (fewer than five days).

●

Coordinate the BVSD calendar with the University of Colorado-Boulder and St. Vrain Valley School District.

●

End first semester prior to winter break.

●

End the school year prior to Memorial Day.

●

Avoid scheduling breaks that would interfere with student participation in key assessments such as Access (for English Language Development), Colorado Measures for Academic Success (CMAS), Colorado SAT (CO-SAT), Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB).

4

Policy Redline The proposed redline addresses the following: ●

Current language in multiple negotiated agreements

●

Balance of different priorities with a primary focus on students

●

CHSAA athletics and activities calendar constructs that affect all districts

●

Locations where BVSD staff live vs. work and impact of other districts’ calendars on our workforce.

●

Professional development needs to maintain staff knowledge and skill levels.

●
