Enrollment at BVSD
BVSD begins community conversations and considers next steps as enrollment continues to decline Just like school districts across the state and the nation, BVSD is experiencing declining enrollment and the corresponding reduction in funding that accompanies it. Since 2017, enrollment in the district has declined by 3,675 students. That is more students than the current enrollment of our two largest high schools combined. This school year we saw the largest drop—525 students—since the pandemic. Projections predict enrollment will continue to fall at a rate of 1.3% over the next five years, totaling 1,670 students.
Why is this especially an issue in BVSD?
In addition to dwindling birth rates and an aging population, the high cost of living in BVSD, coupled with low housing inventory due to people aging in place and more affordable housing opportunities in surrounding districts further fuels our decline.
Future Enrollment Projections
Our Response
The Board of Education has recognized the need to take action now to build resiliency in our system as we prepare for future enrollment drops. Options the Board is considering include: Introducing or expanding focus programs Reconfiguring grades, e.g. K-2 & 3-5 or converting K-8s to elementary and middle Relocating focus programs Consolidating two or more schools into one building (existing or new) Closing one or more schools and distributing students to multiple schools
Past Enrollment
This spring we will be engaging our community
We know we make the best decisions for our students, staff, and families when we connect with our community around difficult issues. This month we are launching a community engagement process aimed at educating and informing our community about the challenges the district faces in trying to continue to provide high-quality learning experiences across all schools in the face of waning resources.
More updates to come
In the coming months, we will share information and have conversations with stakeholders to collect feedback that will inform the development of options and Board’s decisions. The timeline calls for the Board to take action in the fall prior to the start of Choice Enrollment in the district for implementation for the 2026-27 school year.
