Uh thank you everyone for joining us this evening as we uh as we celebrate uh two of our um board members that are leaving us this year. Uh Rob Anderson, superintendent of the Boulder Valley School District for those who I haven't had a chance to meet. And um an emotional an emotional night for a lot of us as we um as we you know give our thanks and share our gratitude to to both uh Kitty and Beth.

1:06:32I'll start. I'll make a few remarks and then I'll introduce Nicole who will make some remarks probably better than mine and then she'll introduce Kitty and Beth and uh and then I think there's maybe an opportunity for other folks to say say a few words as well. Uh so for those who don't know me, I was hired here in 2018, which seems like a lifetime ago. Uh, and at the time, uh, one of the board members who hired me, it was Kitty Sergeant, and she's leaving. Uh, this is this is, um, this is her last harrah this evening. And, uh, I I I'll just I'll just say that uh, how much Kitty has meant to me personally and my personal growth as a superintendent, as a leader, and uh, what a strong leader she's been. and she has been on this board and has led through some of the most difficult moments that I think this school district has ever seen, whether it was the Marshall fire or COVID 19. Um the the work that we're doing leading up to declining enrollment um and also has seen some of the best progress that this district has ever seen uh with our recent results from uh from Colorado Department of Education being the highest performance that BBSD has ever seen in its history. And so Kitty,

1:07:48you've been there for us um in in in some of our hardest times and has seen some of our best times. And so I will always be indebted to you and thank you so much for your service. And um I know we're going to keep talking. So this isn't goodbye. This is just a a celebration of your service. and Beth Nisnik, who has been an amazing board member for the past four years, uh has has led with purpose and strength and um has been just an amazing team member, has served as our vice president, um and has led um with incredible uh grace and and just um always sticks up for what's right and uh and and knows and understands what that is. has been a huge supporter of our all together for all student strategic plan and um I know that she's going to go and do great things in other ways for for K12 education and but her service on the board has certainly uh has been an incredible asset to our community to myself as a leader and so but Beth see you around too so I know that um I know that nobody uh neither of you are going anywhere and uh as as like many of our former board members who continue to stay engaged and continue to serve serve

1:09:00behind the scenes. And so, um, just want to take a moment to thank all of those that have served on the board that are here tonight to celebrate as well. And so, thank you all again for for being here. And I'm going to turn the presentation over to Nicole. >> Thanks for that, Dr. Anderson said much of what I was going to say you've already covered. I've had the pleasure of serving this board for four years. During those four years, working alongside Kitty and Beth, um Beth and I happen to campaign together. And what I learned very quickly about Beth was that she has the gift to Gab. And so if you've spent any time with Beth, she will I sometimes it's hard to get a word in, but she cares deeply about everything and really wants to make sure everybody feels connected and engaged and involved and appreciated. And I've really noticed that her about that about that in her since we were campaigning. Um, she campaigned tirelessly, incredibly hard, kept me going when I was ready to be done. Um, lots of energy she's always brought to this board. Working with Kitty was a great pleasure. Kitty has a lot of experience in this board. She is an outstanding leader. She is an outstanding grimaran as we all know and

1:10:20she really advocates more than anybody for good governance and what it means to be a board member and and having conversations that are difficult and remembering what our role is as a collective and as an individual to really move the work of this district forward. As Dr. Edison said, we are doing amazing things as a school district and we wouldn't be able to do some of those things without strong governance and from leaders like Kitty and Beth. So, I really appreciate all that you've done, Kitty. I appreciate your guidance and um helping me understand what it is to be to be a leader, to understand more deeply Robert's rules and um helping this board, helping navigate these board through what is the start of of what will be very interesting times. So, thank you so much for your service. With that, I welcome Beth to come up first, then Kitty to give any remarks that you would like to give.

1:11:17Hi everyone. Thanks so much for being here. I want to Oh, thank you. Thank you. Now you can see me so much better. Thank you, Lolina. Um, first I want to start by saying congratulations to our new board members. Um, you're stepping into a role that is challenging, meaningful, and deeply rewarding. I have a couple wishes for you. I'm wishing you clarity, courage, and a sense of humor as you get started. Um, a few thank yous are in order for me. First, I want to thank the families, educators, and students of BBSD kind of at large. Um, you're the reason this work matters, and your engagement, your feedback, and your care for our schools have been what has shaped every single decision we've made in this room together. Uh, this community's commitment is truly something special. we know because we we hear it at our uh community participation moments. To my fellow board members, past and present. Um I want to thank you for your dedication, your honesty, and the heart you guys bring to uh every single meeting that we have in this room. It has been an honor to serve alongside you and I will miss you very much. Think of me at CASBY this year when you guys are playing charades.

1:12:27So, I hope I can get a little shout out. It's just a little inside joke. Um to our incredible superintendent, Dr. Anderson, and our leadership cabinet here, I want to say thank you both as a board member, but also as a parent in this community. Um Rob, your leadership has been absolutely remarkable and the district is deeply fortunate to have you. And uh our people and the people in this room really make BBSD the place to be. I'm going to miss seeing you all on Tuesday nights. And finally, to my family and friends, some of whom are here graciously tonight. Um, thank you for supporting me throughout my campaign and my board service, to my parents and to and to Andy. Um, I want to thank you for I lost my spot. Um, you always believed in this work. And to my friends who kept me grounded on those really long nights. Thanks, guys. And of course, a special thanks to PICE and Aya. Um, thank you for your patience, your humor, and your uh, encouragement.

1:13:26Roles like this are always a big team effort. I think we know that, and I'm so grateful for you guys. Um, so, as I'm finishing up my term, as Dr. Anderson said, I'm going back to graduate school uh, to deepen my work in educational leadership. So, I hope that learning continues to serve this community in some capacity somehow, someday, TVD. Um, I'm leaving the board tonight. However, I'm not stepping away from BBSD entirely. Um, I'll still be around over at LRAK, our long-range advisory committee, which is where I'm told board members go to retire. So, I will be uh I'll be cheering you on and supporting BBSD in any way I can, just with a few less Tuesday night meetings. So, thank you all so much for the honor of serving this community. It's been a pleasure.

1:14:32>> Serving on this board has been one of the honors of my life. And I said I wasn't going to get tearary, but I cry at everything. I cry at TV commercials if the squirrels are cold. Anyway, um it has been my great honor to serve and we really have been through a lot since I started. My first year in we jumped right into a search for a new superintendent and I had no experience I'm and I'm glad to say with the former superintendent so I didn't carry any baggage that was attached to that. I think that's probably the best thing I've done on the board. And I mean, obviously didn't do it by myself. No, no board member does anything by themselves, but hiring Rob has made such a huge difference. We our district has improved so much and this was a good district. So to improve a good district is really a lot of work. But moving from a district of schools to a school district, bringing in UVA to help with our schools that were struggling, that's all been wonderful. And I'm I'm so proud to have been a part of that. And we've seen some upheavalss when I've been on my time on the board.

1:15:50Um the first one was the um classical academy that wanted to open a charter school and they were bound and determined they were going to get through us and they didn't and we considered offering classical academy to folks here if there were enough people in the district who wanted it and there weren't. So that was contentious. Of course, the pandemic was a real struggle, and I have to say, had I not been serving on this school board, I would never have had the chance to be accused of committing crimes against humanity, which happened about three times, I think, during the pandemic. So, we got through that. And then all of the work with declining enrollment that has been that's difficult tough work because people are going to be disappointed no matter what you do. And I knew that coming in. I thought I'm going to do the best I can and know that I'm doing the best that I can do and you know I don't care if somebody you know thinks I'm awful for that. But another thing I'm proud of just for our district is how much we work with community. You know, we don't make any big decisions for the schools without engaging our community.

1:17:14And that's what keeps us grounded. That's what makes makes sure that we will do what our parents want, what our community members want. So, thank you to everybody I've worked with. I've loved meeting and working with all of you. I stand on the shoulders of board members who came before me and I thank you all too. Um I didn't prepare something like Beth did so I'm just kind of going off the top of my head but again I just want to say what an honor this has been for me and I will continue to be involved. I will continue to be the copy editor for policy and I will continue continue on with LRAK. I'd been the liaison the last year and so starting tomorrow I guess I'll be an official well no the new board will have to approve Beth and me to be on that but please and you know I might I don't know what else I can do for the district but I do want to stay involved and do whatever I can to be useful and to help move the district forward. So, thank you all so much for your confidence in me um for voting for me and keeping me in office.

1:19:07And so we do have a couple of um of gifts of gratitude and of recognition. I just want to thank both Beth and Kitty for being really good guidance to those of us. I I'm sure I can speak for my fellow board members who all came in new to the board and how important it is to have the guidance of people who have um been through the process and understand the lay of the land. So I just want to tell you guys that not only for encouraging us to run s supporting us as we did that but then welcoming welcoming us in and um helping us to understand how to work on our board. So um and when

1:21:15you said Kitty just then about being useful, you two are two of the most useful women I know. So I I have no doubt about your future trajectory. I would like everyone to turn their attention, please, to the screens for our land acknowledgement this evening. The Boulder Valley School District resides and operates on land that is the ancestral homeland and unjustly and illegally taken territory of the Ute, Pueblin, Arapjo, Cheyenne, Apache, Navajo, and 48 other tribal nations historically tied to this land who have called this land home since time and memorial. We acknowledge the atrocities committed here, including the painful history of genocide, forced assimilation, and efforts to alienate the indigenous inhabitants from their homeland, supported by the policies of the United States government.

1:24:40BBSD is aware of the many indigenous peoples, past and present, and their dignified nations and cultures, who care for this land with strength and resilience. BBD recognizes the histories of the land in Colorado and the survival of many nations that carried their oral traditions into the present. >> >> It is BBSD's responsibility to educate ourselves, our community, and our students so that we can embrace the wisdom and knowledge of indigenous peoples and actively stand together to address injustices. In offering this land acknowledgement, we affirm and honor the history, wisdom, oral traditions, and resilience of indigenous people, and recognize the responsibility to care for and appreciate this land together. Our first action item this evening is a certification of election results for the director districts. The board has received the official abstract votes of the board of election of of the board elections from the county clerks. Is there a motion to adopt resolution 25-30 certifying their these results? Moved by Kitty, seconded by Beth.
