National Impaired Driving Prevention Month December 2025 During December, which is recognized annually as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, we call on all Boulder community members to help save a life by planning ahead, calling for a ride, only driving when sober, and helping friends and loved ones do the same. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2023, the most recent data year available, 12,429 people died in drunk driving crashes. Moreover, about 30% of all traffic crash fatalities involve alcohol. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported that there have been 172 impaired driving-related fatalities in Colorado so far in 2025. Impaired drivers endanger themselves, passengers, passersby, and the road workers and local law enforcement who work to keep our streets safe. The best way to reduce the deadly cost of impaired driving is prevention, which starts with raising awareness of the risks and consequences of impaired driving. Prevention also means treating substance abuse disorders to reduce the number of people struggling with alcohol and drug addiction issues. We must all help spread the word, offer to be a designated driver for others when we can, and call a ride when we need it. We, the City Council of the City of Boulder, Colorado, declare December 2025 as

National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and urge all Boulder community members to always arrange a sober ride home, this month and all year long. If you see someone putting themselves or others at risk, offer help. You could save a life.
