Academic Calendar Input and Development Process

Background and Policy Revision 2025 The Academic Calendars are created in accordance with BVSD Board Policy ICA/ICA-R, Negotiated Agreements, and in compliance with the Colorado Department of Education‘s requirements for instructional time.

Employee Negotiated Agreements Below are elements from our current employee contracts:

Students must be in school for

172 days.

additional days must be set aside as teacher work days

4

additional days are set aside as exchange days for parent-teacher conferences, which are held after school.

4½

additional days must be set aside as teacher Professional Development Days.

The following holidays must be on our calendar: ❏ Thanksgiving Day ❏ Christmas Day ❏ New Year's Day ❏ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day ❏ Washington‐Lincoln Day (Presidents’ Day) ❏ Memorial Day ❏ Independence Day ❏ Labor Day ❏ Veterans Day (Per the State of Colorado, Veterans Day must be celebrated on November 11th)

ICA-R: Additional Factors for School Calendars ●

Provide a calendar that is aligned across schools and levels.

●

Balance instructional days across both semesters.

●

Allow professional development to be scheduled throughout the school year and at times when attendance is likely to be high.

●

End first semester prior to winter break.

●

Consider impact of climate change and weather.

●

Limit the number of partial school weeks (fewer than five days).

●

Avoid scheduling breaks that would interfere with student participation in key assessments, including on achievement, for college admission, for advanced placement and International Baccalaureate, and language development.

●

Address CHSAA athletics and activities calendar requirements.

●

Consider the calendars of the University of Colorado-Boulder and other neighboring districts where a significant portion of BVSD staff live.
